Does growth scan treat oligohydramnios?

Oligohydramnios means there is less amniotic fluid than expected. A growth scan can estimate the fluid level and review the baby's growth, movement, position and wellbeing. These observations help the maternity team understand whether closer surveillance is needed.

The scan cannot directly restore fluid or treat the reason it is low. Management may involve repeat assessments, checking maternal and fetal wellbeing, reviewing possible fluid loss, and planning care according to the pregnancy stage and clinical findings.

Attend follow-up appointments and tell the team about any fluid leaking from the vagina, changes in fetal movement, or new pain. Drink fluids according to your clinician's advice, but do not rely on drinking water as a substitute for assessment or prescribed care.

Contact your maternity unit promptly if movements are reduced, you suspect your waters have broken, or you have bleeding or contractions. Seek urgent advice if you develop severe abdominal pain, fever, or feel acutely unwell.

Ask how the fluid was assessed, whether fetal growth is reassuring, when the next check is needed, and what symptoms should lead you to attend maternity triage immediately.
