Does growth scan treat twin and multiple pregnancy?

With twins or more, ultrasound can assess each baby's measurements, position, fluid around each baby and, when relevant, the placenta or shared circulation. Comparing growth patterns helps the maternity team decide how closely to follow the pregnancy.

The scan cannot change the number of babies, correct a growth difference, or prevent every pregnancy complication. Its findings guide decisions about appointments, additional monitoring and the timing or setting of birth.

Keep every scan and maternity appointment, because the team may need to compare measurements over time. Ask how each baby is labelled in the report and what the measurements mean. Follow the advice about rest, activity, medicines and birth planning that is specific to your pregnancy; do not make changes based on the scan alone.

Call your maternity unit promptly if fetal movements are reduced or noticeably different from the pattern your team described. Seek urgent advice for vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions, severe headache with visual changes, or sudden severe abdominal pain.

Ask whether the babies are growing similarly, whether they share a placenta or amniotic sac, how often monitoring is needed, and which findings would change the birth plan.
