Does a growth scan treat fetal growth restriction?

Ultrasound measurements estimate the baby's size and track growth over time. The scan may also assess amniotic fluid, the placenta, movement, and blood flow through selected vessels. These findings help the team judge whether the baby may need closer observation.

Fetal growth restriction has different possible causes, including placental problems, maternal health conditions, and fetal factors. A scan cannot make the baby grow or correct the underlying cause, but it can support timely decisions.

Keep scheduled maternity appointments and ask when the results will be discussed. Your care plan may include repeat scans, blood-flow checks, blood-pressure review, urine testing, fetal heart-rate monitoring, or planning the safest timing and place of birth.

Take medicines as prescribed and tell your maternity team about reduced movements, bleeding, fluid leakage, headache, visual changes, or upper abdominal pain. Do not use home measurements to replace clinical monitoring.
