Does a GP consultation treat Zika virus infection?

Zika virus infection is often assessed from your symptoms, travel or mosquito exposure history and relevant health circumstances. A GP can consider other causes of fever, rash, red eyes or joint pain, and decide whether testing or specialist advice is appropriate. There is no routine consultation procedure that directly clears the virus. Care commonly focuses on rest, fluids and relief of troublesome symptoms, with medicine choices tailored to your health and possible alternative diagnoses.

Arrange a GP appointment if you have symptoms after possible exposure, especially after travel to an area where Zika occurs. Tell the clinician when symptoms began, where you travelled, whether you may be pregnant, and which medicines or supplements you use. Avoid mosquito bites while unwell by using suitable repellent, covering exposed skin and staying in screened or air-conditioned spaces. Ask about sexual precautions because Zika can also be transmitted sexually.

Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, fainting, confusion, severe weakness, new limb weakness, difficulty swallowing or rapidly worsening illness. Contact a clinician promptly if you are pregnant or could be pregnant and have possible exposure or symptoms. These warning signs need assessment because a simple viral illness is not the only possible explanation.
