Does a GP consultation treat swimmer's ear?

Swimmer's ear, also called otitis externa, is inflammation or infection of the ear canal. The GP may ask about pain, itching, discharge, hearing changes and recent swimming, then look into the canal. Treatment can include prescribed ear drops, pain relief and advice to keep the ear dry. The correct drops depend on the examination, especially if the eardrum may be damaged.

Keep water out of the affected ear while it heals and do not insert cotton buds, fingers or other objects. Use pain relief only if it is suitable for you and follow the label. Do not use leftover ear drops, because some products are unsafe when the eardrum is perforated. Arrange assessment if discharge, reduced hearing or significant tenderness is present.

Seek urgent help for severe or rapidly worsening pain, swelling spreading beyond the ear, fever with marked illness, facial weakness or new dizziness. People with diabetes or a weakened immune system should seek prompt medical advice for ear-canal pain or discharge.

Ask which drops are appropriate, whether the eardrum can be seen, how to keep the ear dry, and when hearing or pain should start to improve. Mention diabetes, immune problems, allergies and previous ear surgery.
