Does a GP consultation treat strep throat?

During the visit, the GP will ask about sore throat, fever, swallowing difficulty and how quickly symptoms began. They may examine the throat and neck and consider whether the pattern fits a bacterial infection, a viral illness or another cause. Strep throat is caused by bacteria, and a clinician may prescribe antibiotics when they are appropriate. Antibiotics do not help viral sore throats, so do not start leftover medicine or share a prescription.

Arrange a GP appointment if the sore throat is severe, persists, or makes eating and drinking difficult. Until you are assessed, rest, drink fluids, and choose soft foods if swallowing hurts. Use only symptom medicines that are suitable for you and follow the label directions; a pharmacist can help you choose safely. If the GP prescribes antibiotics, take them exactly as directed and complete the prescribed course unless the prescriber changes the plan.

Seek urgent medical help if you struggle to breathe, cannot swallow saliva, develop marked swelling in the mouth or neck, become confused, or cannot keep fluids down. Prompt assessment is also needed for worsening one-sided throat pain, a muffled voice or difficulty opening the mouth, because these can signal a complication.

Ask whether your examination suggests strep throat, whether testing is needed, which treatments are suitable for you, and what improvement to expect. Tell the GP about allergies, pregnancy, regular medicines and any recent antibiotic use.
