Does GP consultation treat postural hypotension?

Short answer
A GP consultation can assess postural hypotension, review its causes and medicines, and create a plan to reduce dizziness, falls and fainting.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical trigger
- Standing after sitting or lying down
- Safety step
- Sit or lie down when dizziness starts
What this means
Postural hypotension, also called orthostatic hypotension, is a drop in blood pressure after standing that may cause light-headedness, blurred vision, weakness or fainting. A GP can compare blood pressure and pulse while you are lying or sitting and then standing, review medicines and ask about fluid intake, heat, illness and heart or nerve conditions. Management targets the cause. It may involve adjusting a medicine with supervision, improving hydration when appropriate, moving gradually and addressing another health problem.
What to do
Arrange a GP review if standing repeatedly makes you dizzy or unsteady. Rise slowly, pause at the edge of the bed, and hold a stable surface before walking. Sit or lie down as soon as symptoms begin. Keep your surroundings clear to reduce falls, and record when episodes happen, what you were doing, and any medicines taken. Do not stop blood-pressure or other prescribed medicines on your own; a clinician may need to change them safely.
When to seek care
Get emergency help after a faint with injury, or for chest pain, severe breathlessness, confusion, new weakness, a very irregular heartbeat or ongoing inability to stand. Seek prompt medical advice if episodes are frequent, occur without warning, happen during exercise, or are accompanied by black stools or heavy bleeding. A GP can determine whether same-day assessment is needed.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your medicines, hydration, blood count or heart rhythm could contribute, how to measure symptoms safely, and which fluids or dietary changes fit your health. Ask what to do before showering, exercising or travelling if standing triggers symptoms.

Questions people ask
Can a GP treat postural hypotension?
A GP can identify contributing factors and tailor practical measures or medicine changes; the underlying cause determines the treatment.
Should I stop my blood-pressure tablets?
No. Ask a GP or pharmacist to review them, because stopping suddenly may create other risks.
