Does GP consultation treat Long COVID?

Short answer
A GP consultation can assess Long COVID symptoms, rule out other causes, create a management plan, and arrange referrals when needed.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the consultation involves
Long COVID, also called post-COVID-19 syndrome, can involve fatigue, breathlessness, brain fog, sleep problems, pain, palpitations, or changes in smell and taste. Symptoms may affect different parts of daily life and can change over time. A GP will ask about the original illness, current symptoms, activity limits, sleep, mood, medicines, and other health conditions.
There is no single treatment that fits everyone. The consultation may include an examination and tests to look for problems that resemble or add to Long COVID. Care can focus on pacing activity, symptom relief, rehabilitation advice, and support for work or study. A referral may be appropriate for persistent breathing, heart, neurological, or other concerns.
How to prepare and manage symptoms
Keep a simple record of symptoms, triggers, activity, rest, sleep, and any delayed worsening after exertion. Share this with your GP, along with your current medicines and details of previous COVID-19 illness if known. Pace tasks, take planned rests, and increase activity gradually only if your symptoms tolerate it. Avoid pushing through a marked symptom flare, and ask for a tailored plan rather than changing medicines on your own.
When to seek care
Get urgent help for severe or worsening breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, new weakness, confusion, blue lips, or sudden difficulty speaking. Arrange a GP review for new symptoms, a clear decline in function, repeated palpitations, or exhaustion that prevents usual activities. These symptoms can have causes other than Long COVID and should be assessed on their own merits.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which symptoms need tests, how to pace activity safely, whether rehabilitation or another service could help, and what change should lead to urgent review.
