Does a GP consultation treat head lice?

The GP may inspect the scalp and hair for live lice or nits and distinguish them from dandruff, hair-product residue or another scalp problem. They can recommend a medicated lotion or another appropriate option, explain how long it should stay on the hair, and tell you when a repeat application may be needed. Treatment choice can depend on age, pregnancy, scalp irritation, previous treatment and whether live lice are still present.

Follow the product instructions carefully and use a fine-toothed detection comb on wet, conditioned hair if advised. Check close household contacts and treat people with live lice according to professional advice. Avoid sharing combs, brushes, hats and bedding until the situation is addressed. Cleaning the whole home or using insecticide sprays is not usually necessary; focus on items that have recently touched the head and wash or isolate them as directed.

Arrange medical advice if live lice remain after correctly following treatment, the scalp has sores or signs of infection, or itching is severe. Seek prompt help if a child has extensive scratching, spreading redness, pus or fever. A GP can also reassess an itchy scalp when no live lice are found, because eczema, dermatitis and other causes can look similar.
