Does a GP consultation treat goitre?

A goitre is an enlarged thyroid gland at the front of the neck. It can occur when the thyroid makes too much hormone, too little hormone or a usual amount. The GP will examine the swelling, ask about changes in weight, temperature tolerance, heartbeat, bowel habits and energy, and check whether swallowing or breathing is affected. Blood tests can assess thyroid function. An ultrasound or other investigation may be arranged to examine the thyroid more closely. Treatment is guided by the cause rather than the swelling alone.

Arrange a GP appointment for a new or growing neck swelling, even if it is not painful. Bring a list of medicines and supplements, including products containing iodine or thyroid hormones. Note changes in your voice, swallowing, breathing, appetite, weight or heartbeat. Do not start thyroid medicine or change an existing dose without clinical advice. If the GP recommends monitoring, keep the follow-up appointment so changes in size and thyroid function can be reviewed.

Seek urgent help if neck swelling causes difficulty breathing, noisy breathing, inability to swallow fluids or rapidly worsening pressure in the neck. Arrange prompt medical review for a rapidly enlarging lump, new persistent hoarseness or a racing heartbeat with dizziness or chest discomfort.

Ask what may be causing the enlargement, which thyroid tests are needed, whether imaging is appropriate, and how often the swelling should be checked.
