Does a GP consultation treat gallstones?

Gallstones can cause episodes of pain in the upper abdomen, often after eating, but some stones cause no symptoms. A GP will ask about the pain, nausea, fever, bowel changes and previous episodes, then examine your abdomen. Blood tests or an ultrasound may help clarify the cause. If stones are causing repeated or troublesome symptoms, the GP can refer you to a specialist to discuss removal of the gallbladder or another suitable approach.

Arrange a GP appointment if abdominal pain keeps returning or affects eating and daily activities. Keep a note of when pain starts, where it spreads, how long it lasts and whether vomiting or fever occurs. Until assessed, choose meals that you tolerate and drink fluids. Do not take someone else's medicine; ask a clinician or pharmacist which pain relief is suitable for you.

Seek urgent medical care for severe or persistent upper-abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fever or chills, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, or marked tenderness. These symptoms can indicate inflammation, infection or blockage and need prompt assessment rather than a routine appointment.

Ask whether your symptoms fit gallstones, which tests are appropriate, what to do during another pain episode, and whether referral to a surgical or hospital team is needed. Mention pregnancy, regular medicines and any previous abdominal conditions.
