Does a GP consultation treat dementia?

Short answer
A GP consultation does not cure dementia, but it can assess symptoms, identify treatable contributors, begin supportive care and arrange specialist referral.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the consultation can do
Dementia describes a pattern of changes in memory, thinking, communication or everyday function. A GP may ask when the changes began, how they affect daily tasks, and whether someone close to you has noticed a difference. The appointment may include a physical examination, medication review and simple thinking or memory questions.
The GP can check for problems that may worsen concentration or memory, such as mood symptoms, sleep difficulties, medication effects or another illness. Further assessment may involve blood tests, a memory service or another specialist. If dementia is confirmed, the GP can help coordinate follow-up, discuss practical support and review other health conditions.
How to prepare
Write down examples of changes in daily life, including missed appointments, difficulty managing medicines, getting lost or trouble finding words. Bring a current medicine list and, if possible, invite a trusted person who can describe changes you may not notice yourself.
Ask what assessments are planned, whether any medicine or health problem could be contributing, and who will coordinate follow-up. Continue prescribed medicines unless a clinician advises otherwise, and mention driving, work, finances or home safety if these have become difficult.
When to seek care promptly
Arrange a GP appointment for gradual or persistent changes in memory or thinking that interfere with ordinary activities. Seek urgent medical help for sudden confusion, new weakness, trouble speaking, a severe headache, collapse or a rapid change in alertness, because these can signal an acute problem rather than established dementia.
Questions for your doctor
What changes should we record before the next visit? Which tests could clarify the cause? Would a memory clinic or another specialist help? How can we make medicines, driving and home routines safer? What support is available for the person providing care?
