Does a GP consultation treat cold sores?

Cold sores are grouped blisters, usually around the lips or mouth, that can tingle, crust, and heal over time. A GP can examine the area and consider whether the appearance fits a cold sore or another problem such as impetigo, an ulcer, or irritation. The clinician may recommend gentle care and pain relief, and may discuss an antiviral medicine when timing, severity, recurrence, or health history makes it suitable.

Keep the area clean, avoid picking the crust, and wash your hands after touching your face. Do not kiss anyone or share lip products, cups, towels, or utensils while a sore is present. Avoid touching the eyes after contact with the sore. If episodes recur, note the tingling stage and possible triggers so you can discuss whether an early treatment plan would help.

Arrange prompt medical advice for a sore near the eye, eye pain, vision change, widespread blisters, severe pain, difficulty drinking, or sores that are not healing. Seek advice sooner if you have a weakened immune system, significant eczema, or close contact with a newborn. Urgent eye symptoms need same-day assessment.

Ask whether the lesion looks like a cold sore, whether an antiviral is appropriate, how to reduce spread at home, and what to do when the first tingling starts. Tell the GP about pregnancy, immune conditions, eye symptoms, and medicines.
