Does a GP consultation treat chickenpox?

Chickenpox commonly causes an itchy rash that changes from spots to fluid-filled blisters and then scabs. A GP can assess the rash, timing, general symptoms, age, pregnancy status, immune health, and contact with vulnerable people. Advice may include fluids, rest, ways to reduce itching, and safe medicines for fever or discomfort. Some people need prescription antiviral treatment or closer monitoring, particularly when complications are a concern.

Call the practice before attending so staff can reduce exposure to people who could become seriously unwell. Avoid scratching, keep nails short, wear loose clothing, and do not share towels or clothing. Follow the GP’s medicine instructions and stay away from school, work, or group settings until the clinician confirms it is appropriate to return and the spots have crusted.

Get urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, confusion, severe drowsiness, repeated vomiting, dehydration, a severe headache, or a rash that becomes hot, painful, and rapidly red. Seek prompt advice if the person with suspected chickenpox is pregnant, very young, immunosuppressed, or has significant long-term illness.

Ask whether the rash is consistent with chickenpox, how to control itching, which medicines are safe, when isolation can end, and what symptoms should trigger urgent review. Mention pregnancy, immune problems, and recent medicines.
