Does GP consultation treat allergic rhinitis?

Allergic rhinitis can cause sneezing, an itchy or blocked nose, a runny nose, and itchy watery eyes after contact with an allergen. The GP may ask about seasons, home or workplace exposures, pets, and how symptoms affect sleep. They can also consider infection, asthma, sinus problems, or medicine effects when the pattern is unusual.

Management may include reducing exposure to known triggers, saline rinsing, a nasal spray, or an antihistamine when suitable. Correct spray technique matters, and the GP can explain how to use treatment safely and when a different option is needed.

Note where and when symptoms appear and bring a list of current medicines. Use the recommended treatment consistently, keep windows closed when outdoor triggers are high if practical, and wash after heavy exposure. Avoid using decongestant nasal sprays for longer than advised, as overuse can worsen blockage.

Call emergency services for swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, severe wheezing, trouble breathing, faintness, or rapidly spreading hives. Arrange medical review for persistent one-sided blockage, recurrent nosebleeds, facial swelling, or symptoms that remain uncontrolled despite treatment.

Ask which trigger is most plausible, how to use a nasal spray correctly, whether asthma symptoms should be checked, and when allergy testing or referral might help.
