Does gout cause a hot, red, swollen joint?

During a gout flare, urate crystals trigger inflammation inside the joint. Increased blood flow can make the skin look red and feel hot, while inflammation draws fluid into the joint and causes swelling. Pain may be intense, and even light touch or movement can feel difficult.

The appearance is not enough to confirm gout. Cellulitis, septic arthritis, injury and other inflammatory conditions can produce a similar hot, red joint. A health professional may need to assess the whole picture and sometimes test joint fluid.

Protect the joint from pressure and rest it in a supported position. Use a cloth-wrapped cool pack briefly, allowing the skin to warm between applications. Follow an existing gout treatment plan exactly. Avoid self-treating a new hot joint with leftover antibiotics or someone else’s medicine.

Get urgent care for fever, chills, confusion, marked weakness, rapidly spreading redness, severe worsening pain, or a joint that cannot be moved. These features can occur with infection, which requires prompt evaluation. A first hot, red, swollen joint also deserves timely medical review, even without fever.
