Does gestational hypertension cause swelling in pregnancy?

Some swelling is common as pregnancy progresses, particularly in the feet and ankles after standing. Swelling that appears suddenly, becomes marked, or affects the face and hands can need closer assessment. Gestational hypertension may occur with swelling, but the pattern of swelling does not diagnose high blood pressure. A clinician will measure your blood pressure and may check urine and blood tests to look for effects on your health.

Tell your maternity team about new or rapidly increasing swelling, especially if it affects your face or hands. Note when it started and whether it is accompanied by headache, vision changes, pain beneath the ribs, or feeling unwell. Resting on your side, avoiding long periods of standing, and raising your legs may ease ordinary ankle swelling, but these measures should not replace assessment when warning symptoms are present.

Contact urgent maternity care for sudden swelling of the face or hands, swelling with a severe headache, visual disturbance, upper abdominal pain, vomiting, confusion, chest pain, or difficulty breathing. Seek immediate help for a seizure, fainting, heavy bleeding, or reduced fetal movement. Blood pressure can be high without obvious swelling, so attend scheduled pregnancy checks even when you feel well.
