Does genomic tumour profiling treat bowel cancer?

The laboratory studies genetic changes in tumour tissue, commonly using material from a biopsy or surgery. Findings can add detail to the bowel cancer assessment and may help the oncology team consider medicines aimed at a particular molecular feature. A report can also find no relevant feature for an available option. Doctors interpret it with the cancer’s location and stage, other tumour markers, earlier treatment, health and goals. The result is not a promise that a treatment will help, and it cannot replace scans, pathology review or medical assessment.

Ask whether profiling is recommended for your bowel cancer and whether existing tissue can be used. Clarify what the test is looking for, how long the report may take and which decisions could change after it. If the report suggests a targeted or immune-based option, ask how the team will judge whether it fits your cancer and what monitoring it involves. A negative or unhelpful result does not mean there are no treatment choices. Continue the plan agreed with your team unless they advise a change.

Tell your care team promptly about increasing abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, inability to pass stool or gas, or fresh bleeding. Seek urgent help for severe pain, fainting, marked weakness, or heavy bleeding. These warning symptoms require clinical assessment and should not wait for genomic profiling or its report.

You could ask: What treatment decision is this test intended to inform? Is my stored tissue suitable? Which molecular findings matter for my bowel cancer? Could the result change the treatment sequence? What alternatives remain if no useful change is found? How will the findings be explained to me?
