Does genomic tumour profiling treat breast cancer?

A laboratory examines genetic changes in a sample of the tumour, often tissue already collected during a biopsy or operation. The report may identify changes that help the team understand how the cancer behaves or whether a targeted medicine could be considered. It can also show that a particular genomic target was not found. The result is one part of the clinical picture, alongside the tumour type, stage, hormone or protein markers, previous treatment, general health and personal preferences. A result does not by itself decide that a medicine will work, and it does not replace examination or imaging.

Ask whether profiling is suitable for your tumour and whether the sample is adequate. Find out which changes the laboratory will assess, how the result may affect the treatment choices being discussed, and when the report is expected. If a possible targeted option appears, ask about its purpose, how it would be given, expected monitoring and other choices. Your oncologist may recommend treatment without profiling, or may combine the result with other tests. Do not delay prescribed care while waiting for a report unless your treating team tells you to.

Contact your oncology team promptly if you develop new or worsening symptoms, have difficulty breathing, experience heavy bleeding, or cannot keep fluids down. Seek urgent medical help for severe breathing trouble, sudden confusion, fainting, or uncontrolled bleeding. These symptoms need assessment because of their severity; they should not be judged by whether a genomic result has identified a treatment option.

Useful questions include: What decision will this test help us make? Is the tissue sample suitable, or is another sample needed? Which result would change my options? How will the findings fit with my breast cancer stage and marker results? Who will explain the report, and what happens if it finds no actionable change?
