Does genital warts cause vulval skin changes?

Genital warts can appear on the vulva or around the vaginal opening as small raised spots, broad-based growths, or groups with an uneven surface. The colour may resemble nearby skin or look lighter or darker. Changes may be painless, though rubbing can lead to itching, soreness, or minor bleeding.

Vulval skin changes have many possible causes. Friction, eczema, dermatitis, thrush, lichen sclerosus, cysts, and other infections can alter colour, texture, or thickness. A visual description alone cannot confirm HPV or rule out another condition.

Arrange an examination if the change is new, persistent, spreading, itchy, painful, or associated with a growth. Use plain water or a gentle unperfumed cleanser, pat dry, and avoid scented washes, deodorants, and harsh scrubbing. Do not apply wart remover or steroid cream unless it was prescribed for this area.

If genital warts are diagnosed, a clinician can explain options such as prescribed medicines, freezing, or removal. Discuss partner communication, condoms or dental dams, HPV vaccination, and any cervical screening that is due.

Seek prompt assessment for a patch that changes quickly, becomes thick or hard, develops an ulcer, bleeds repeatedly, or causes persistent pain. Urgent care is appropriate for severe swelling, fever, spreading redness, or trouble passing urine.
