Genetic counselling does not treat a BRCA gene mutation; it helps guide informed care decisions. A counsellor explains why testing may be considered, what results can and cannot show, and how findings might affect you and relatives. Counselling is supportive guidance, not a procedure that changes DNA.

BRCA1 and BRCA2 changes can be inherited and may alter the approach to cancer risk assessment. Counselling usually reviews your personal and family history, discusses possible results, and considers privacy, emotional, and family communication questions. It can also help distinguish an inherited risk finding from a diagnosis of cancer.

Gather information about relatives who have had cancer, including the type and age at diagnosis when known, before an appointment. Bring previous genetic reports if available and ask whether testing should begin with an affected relative. After results, request a follow-up discussion so the finding is interpreted in context and any monitoring or prevention options are explained.

Arrange timely medical review if you notice a new breast or other concerning symptom, if a test identifies a BRCA change, or if a close relative receives a relevant result. Seek urgent care for severe bleeding, sudden breathlessness, chest pain, or a rapidly worsening symptom; counselling does not replace assessment of an active problem.

Ask whether your history meets the usual reasons to consider counselling, what test is being proposed, and how a positive, negative, or uncertain result would be handled. Ask who will coordinate screening, whether relatives may benefit from information, and when results should be reviewed.
