Does gastritis cause indigestion?

Gastritis means inflammation or irritation of the stomach lining. It may lead to burning or discomfort in the upper abdomen, early fullness, belching, bloating, or a sour feeling after meals. The irritation can make normal digestion feel uncomfortable. Symptoms may come and go, and their intensity can vary with meals, alcohol, smoking, stress, or medicines that irritate the stomach, such as some anti-inflammatory painkillers. Indigestion alone does not identify the cause; reflux, an ulcer, food intolerance, and other digestive problems can feel similar.

Notice when symptoms occur and whether particular foods, alcohol, smoking, or pain medicines make them worse. Choose smaller meals, eat slowly, and avoid lying down soon after eating. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice, but tell a clinician if symptoms began after a new medicine. A pharmacist or doctor can advise whether an antacid or another treatment is suitable and whether testing for an underlying cause is needed.

Arrange medical advice if indigestion keeps returning, lasts longer than expected, interferes with eating or sleep, or comes with repeated vomiting, trouble swallowing, or unintentional weight loss. Seek urgent help for vomiting blood, black tar-like stools, severe or worsening abdominal pain, faintness, or chest pain, especially with sweating or breathlessness.
