Can gastritis cause abdominal pain?

Gastritis means irritation or inflammation of the stomach lining. It may cause burning, aching, or gnawing discomfort in the upper abdomen, with nausea, early fullness, burping, or reduced appetite. Common contributors include infection with certain stomach bacteria, regular use of some anti-inflammatory pain medicines, alcohol, and physical stress on the body. Similar pain can come from reflux, an ulcer, gallbladder disease, or other abdominal problems.

Arrange an appointment if pain persists, returns, or affects meals. Bring a list of medicines, including over-the-counter pain relievers, and mention alcohol use or previous stomach problems. Eat manageable portions, avoid foods and drinks that clearly worsen the burning, and do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice. Treatment depends on the cause and may involve testing or a medicine that reduces stomach acid.

Get urgent medical care for vomiting blood, black or tar-like stools, sudden severe pain, a rigid or swollen abdomen, faintness, repeated vomiting, difficulty swallowing, or unexplained weight loss. These signs can point to bleeding, a perforation, obstruction, or another condition requiring prompt treatment. Seek review sooner if pain is worsening rather than settling.
