Can gallstones cause indigestion?

Gallstones can interfere with the normal flow of bile from the gallbladder. This may produce upper abdominal discomfort, fullness, burping, or burning that feels like indigestion. Episodes may follow a rich or fatty meal and can occur with pain beneath the ribs on the right or in the upper middle abdomen. Nausea can accompany the discomfort. Indigestion also has many other possible causes, so the symptom alone cannot identify gallstones.

Record when the discomfort starts, what you ate, where it is felt, and whether nausea or pain follows. Until you are assessed, choose smaller meals and avoid foods that repeatedly trigger symptoms. Do not start medicines meant to dissolve stones or treat stomach acid without medical advice. A clinician may examine your abdomen and arrange tests such as an ultrasound if the pattern suggests gallbladder disease.

Seek urgent care for severe or persistent upper abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fever, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, faintness, or a swollen and tender abdomen. These features can signal a blocked bile duct, inflammation, or another condition needing prompt assessment. Arrange a routine appointment if indigestion keeps returning or interrupts eating and sleep.
