Does gait retraining treat IT band syndrome?

Short answer
Gait retraining may help IT Band Syndrome by changing movement patterns that repeatedly load the outside of the knee.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main target
- Repeated loading around the outer knee
- Usually combined with
- Activity adjustment and leg strengthening
What gait retraining changes
IT band syndrome often causes pain on the outer side of the knee during running, walking, or other repeated leg activity. Gait retraining examines how your foot, knee, hip, stride, cadence, and trunk move together. A physiotherapist may identify a pattern that increases irritation and teach a gradual adjustment. This approach addresses one contributor to symptoms; it does not replace assessment of training load, strength, mobility, footwear, or other possible causes of outer-knee pain.
How to use it safely
Begin with an assessment rather than copying a running technique from a video. Your programme may use short practice periods, temporary activity modification, and strengthening for the hip and leg. Increase distance or intensity gradually only when symptoms remain settled during and after activity. Keep a simple record of pain, terrain, speed, and recovery so your clinician can adjust the plan.
When to seek care
Stop the activity and seek assessment if pain becomes sharp, swelling develops, the knee locks, or you cannot bear weight normally. Prompt medical review is sensible after a fall, twisting injury, or a sudden change in symptoms. If outer-knee pain does not improve with a supervised plan or begins affecting ordinary walking, ask for a reassessment of the diagnosis.
Questions for your doctor
What movement pattern is contributing to my symptoms? Which gait change should I practise first? How much running or walking is suitable while I recover? Which strengthening exercises should accompany gait work?

Questions people ask
Can gait retraining cure IT band syndrome by itself?
It may help one contributing movement pattern, but recovery often also requires load management and a tailored exercise plan.
Can I change my running form without guidance?
A gradual, supervised change is safer because an abrupt adjustment can shift stress to another area.
