Does frozen shoulder cause shoulder pain?

Frozen shoulder affects the capsule around the shoulder joint. Pain may be felt deep in the shoulder and can spread into the upper arm. It may be worse when you reach overhead, move the arm behind your back, or lie on the affected side. Stiffness often develops alongside the pain, making dressing, washing, and reaching for a shelf harder. Shoulder pain has many possible causes, so this symptom alone does not identify frozen shoulder.

Arrange an assessment if pain or movement limits daily tasks. A clinician may examine active and assisted shoulder movement and ask when symptoms began. Gentle, regular exercises within a comfortable range can help maintain motion; forcing a painful stretch may aggravate symptoms. Follow the plan given by your clinician, which may include pain relief advice and physiotherapy.

Seek urgent care for sudden severe pain after an injury, a visibly deformed shoulder, new weakness, or an arm that becomes cold, pale, or numb. Get prompt medical advice for fever, redness, warmth, or swelling around the joint. Contact a clinician when persistent pain, night pain, or declining movement is interfering with sleep or routine activities.
