Does fracture fixation surgery treat tibial plateau fracture?

The tibial plateau is the upper surface of the shin bone that meets the thigh bone at the knee. A fracture may involve the joint surface, the supporting bone, or both. Fixation may use plates, screws, or other devices to hold the fragments while the bone heals. Surgery is more likely to be considered when the joint surface is displaced, the knee is unstable, or the fracture pattern cannot be managed safely with protection and monitoring alone.

Keep weight off the injured leg until your clinician confirms that loading is safe. Use the brace, splint, crutches, or walker as prescribed. Elevate the leg when swelling is prominent, move the ankle if advised, and take medicines only as directed. Follow-up imaging helps the team check healing and alignment. Physiotherapy commonly progresses from swelling control and safe knee movement toward strength, balance, and walking.

Get urgent help if the foot becomes cold, pale, blue, numb, or unusually weak; if pain or swelling escalates quickly; or if a cast or brace feels dangerously tight. After surgery, fever, spreading redness, worsening wound drainage, chest pain, or sudden breathlessness also needs prompt medical attention.

Ask how much of the joint surface is involved, whether fixation is recommended, how long weight-bearing restrictions may last, and which knee movements are safe during early rehabilitation.
