Does fracture fixation surgery treat slipped capital femoral epiphysis?

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis, also called SCFE, occurs when the upper femoral growth plate becomes weak and the ball of the hip shifts. Fixation uses screws or another stabilising method to hold the affected area in position. The aim is to prevent further slipping and protect hip alignment. The operation chosen depends on the severity, stability, and condition of the hip, so the treatment plan is individual.

Avoid putting weight through the affected leg unless an orthopaedic specialist has given different instructions. Arrange prompt assessment, especially if there is hip, groin, thigh, or knee pain with a limp. After surgery, follow the weight-bearing plan, attend follow-up visits, and complete rehabilitation exercises when cleared. Keep the wound clean and report increasing drainage or swelling to the surgical team.

Seek urgent medical care for sudden severe hip pain, inability to stand, a rapidly worsening limp, fever, or a leg that looks newly shortened or turned outward. These changes may signal progression of the slip or a complication that needs immediate assessment.

Ask whether the slip is stable, which fixation method is suitable, how much weight can be placed on the leg, and when school, sport, and physiotherapy can safely resume.
