Does fracture fixation surgery treat a clavicle fracture?

The clavicle connects the breastbone with the shoulder and helps position the arm. A fracture may be treated in a sling when the pieces remain acceptably aligned. Surgery may be discussed when fragments are markedly displaced, the skin is threatened, the fracture is open, or the shoulder support needs a more stable repair. Plates and screws commonly hold the pieces while new bone forms. The operation addresses the break, but shoulder stiffness and weakness can still occur without a carefully paced recovery.

Support the arm in the recommended sling and avoid lifting, pushing, or reaching until you have clear instructions. A clinician should assess the skin, nerves, blood flow, and imaging before treatment is chosen. Following surgery, keep the incision protected, move the elbow, wrist, and fingers as advised, and progress shoulder exercises only when the repair is ready. Attend follow-up visits so healing and hardware position can be reviewed.

Get urgent help for a clavicle injury if the skin is broken, the shoulder changes colour, the hand becomes cold or numb, or the arm becomes unusually weak. After surgery, promptly report spreading redness, wound drainage, fever, uncontrolled pain, or sudden swelling. New breathing difficulty or chest pain requires emergency attention because the collarbone lies near important structures.

Ask how far the fragments have moved, whether the skin or nearby nerves are at risk, and what benefit surgery offers in your fracture pattern. Ask about sling duration, arm-use limits, incision care, signs of infection, the timing of shoulder motion, and when strengthening or work activities can safely resume.
