Does fracture fixation surgery treat an ankle fracture?

An ankle fracture may involve the lower ends of the shin bones, the outer ankle bone, or more than one part of the ankle. Surgery is considered when the pieces are displaced, the joint surface is not well aligned, the ankle is unstable, or a closed reduction cannot hold the position. A surgeon may use plates, screws, wires, or a combination to maintain alignment. Some stable fractures can heal in a boot or cast instead. Fixation supports healing; it does not remove the need for protection, follow-up imaging, and rehabilitation.

Keep weight off the injured side unless a clinician has given you different instructions. Elevate the ankle, use a prescribed splint or boot, and avoid adjusting it yourself. Arrange an orthopaedic assessment so examination and imaging can clarify stability, swelling, skin condition, and the safest timing for treatment. After fixation, follow the weight-bearing plan and attend reviews; guided movement and physiotherapy can help restore ankle motion and strength.

Seek urgent medical care if the foot becomes cold, pale, blue, numb, or increasingly difficult to move, or if pain and swelling suddenly worsen. An open wound near the fracture, severe pressure from a splint, or a fever with drainage after surgery also needs prompt assessment. Do not wait for a routine appointment when circulation, sensation, or the skin is changing.

Ask which bones are broken, whether the ankle joint is stable, and what makes fixation preferable to a cast or boot. Clarify the expected restrictions on walking, how the wound and hardware will be checked, which pain medicines are suitable for you, and when ankle movement or physiotherapy should begin.
