Does fracture fixation surgery treat an AC joint injury?

The acromioclavicular joint connects the collarbone to the shoulder blade. An injury can stretch or tear its supporting ligaments and may leave the collarbone displaced. Fixation surgery uses implants or a reconstruction method to stabilise the area while the tissues heal. The decision depends on the degree and direction of displacement, shoulder function, pain, activity needs and the appearance of the joint on examination and imaging. A sling, rest and rehabilitation may be enough for other injuries. Surgery is not designed to treat every shoulder separation.

Before surgery, discuss medicines, smoking, work demands and the planned implant or reconstruction. Afterward, keep the wound clean and dry, use the sling as instructed, and avoid lifting or reaching until cleared. Early exercises may focus on the hand, wrist and elbow, followed later by guided shoulder movement. Attend wound and rehabilitation reviews. Recovery progresses in stages, and the shoulder should return to heavier tasks only when strength, movement and healing meet the clinician's criteria.

Call promptly for worsening wound redness, spreading warmth, drainage, fever, uncontrolled pain, new numbness or a cold or pale hand. A sudden increase in shoulder deformity after a knock, loss of arm movement, chest pain or breathlessness needs urgent assessment. Do not wait for a routine appointment if the dressing becomes soaked or the wound opens.

Ask what makes the injury suitable for surgery, which fixation or reconstruction is planned, how long the sling and lifting restrictions will last, and when driving, work and sport can resume. Clarify wound care, implant follow-up and the rehabilitation milestones.
