Does fracture casting treat a growth plate fracture?

A growth plate is a softer area near the end of a child or teenager's developing bone. A cast can limit movement and protect the area while healing occurs. Some injuries remain in a good position and can be managed with immobilisation alone; others extend through the growth plate, joint or nearby bone and may need gentle realignment or surgery. The clinician considers the child's age, the bone involved, the fracture pattern and whether the position is stable. Follow-up is useful because the growth area may need observation after the cast is removed.

Keep the cast dry and intact, and prevent the child from putting objects inside it. Follow instructions about walking, sports, lifting and school activities. Elevate the limb when it is swollen and encourage movement of uncovered fingers or toes if the care team permits it. Keep every review appointment, even when pain improves, because the clinician may check alignment and later growth. When immobilisation ends, return to activity gradually and follow any exercises provided.

Arrange urgent assessment if fingers or toes become pale, blue, cold, numb or difficult to move, or if swelling and pain increase markedly. A wet, broken or foul-smelling cast, skin rubbing, fever or drainage also needs prompt advice. Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty or chest pain. Contact the treating team if the child develops new limping, a change in limb shape, or persistent pain after the expected healing period.
