Does fracture casting treat an ankle fracture?

The ankle bears body weight, so the clinician checks whether the fracture is aligned and whether the ankle joint remains stable. A cast limits movement and protects the injured area during healing. A temporary splint may be used first when swelling is still increasing; a full cast can follow when the ankle is less swollen. An X-ray review helps determine whether the position is being maintained. A cast does not put a displaced fracture back into place by itself, and some injuries involving the joint or several fracture lines need reduction, surgery, or a different support.

Follow the weight-bearing instructions exactly; use crutches or another aid if you were told not to stand on the injured leg. Keep the cast dry and do not insert objects inside it to scratch. Elevating the leg can help with swelling, while gentle movement of the uncovered toes supports circulation. Attend planned checks so the team can assess skin, swelling, alignment and healing. Do not trim, loosen or remove the cast yourself. When the cast comes off, stiffness and weakness are common, and a gradual return to walking or physiotherapy may be advised.

Contact an urgent service if toes become blue, pale, unusually cold, numb or difficult to move, or if pain and tightness continue to increase despite elevation and prescribed medicine. Seek prompt assessment for a wet, cracked or damaged cast, new rubbing or pressure pain, foul odour, fever, or drainage.
