Does food poisoning cause vomiting?

Vomiting is the body's forceful way of emptying the stomach. With food poisoning, irritation in the digestive tract can stimulate this response, often alongside nausea, cramps, diarrhoea or fever. Some people have food poisoning without vomiting, while repeated vomiting can also be caused by conditions unrelated to food.

Think about the sequence of symptoms and your ability to drink. The time symptoms began after eating, recent travel, new medicines and illness in other people can help a clinician work out what may be happening.

After an episode, pause briefly, then try very small sips of water or oral rehydration solution at regular intervals. Increase the amount slowly when it stays down. Rinse your mouth with water, rest, and return to light foods only after fluids are tolerated. Avoid alcohol and rich meals while your stomach is unsettled. Ask a pharmacist about suitable anti-vomiting treatment, especially for children, pregnancy or ongoing medical conditions.

Seek urgent help for blood or green material in vomit, severe or worsening abdominal pain, confusion, fainting, breathing difficulty, or signs of serious dehydration such as very little urine. Arrange prompt medical advice if vomiting keeps recurring, you cannot retain fluids, you develop a persistent fever, or weakness is increasing. Babies, older adults, pregnant people and those with reduced immunity may need earlier assessment.
