Short answer

Abdominal Pain is a very common presentation of Food Poisoning, often occurring with cramps, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common pattern
Cramping may occur with vomiting, nausea, or diarrhoea.
Hydration clue
Watch for dizziness, dry mouth, and reduced urination.

Why pain can happen

Food poisoning irritates the digestive tract. The bowel may contract more strongly, producing waves of cramping, while inflammation can cause tenderness and an urgent need to pass stool. Symptoms may begin after contaminated food or drink, although timing varies with the cause. Abdominal pain alone cannot identify food poisoning because indigestion, infection, gallbladder problems, appendicitis, and other conditions can feel similar. Notice whether pain is widespread and cramp-like or fixed in one area.

Caring for yourself

Take small, frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. Rest, and eat light foods when you feel able; avoid alcohol and foods that clearly worsen nausea. Wash hands carefully and avoid preparing food for other people while you are unwell. Do not take leftover antibiotics. A pharmacist or clinician can advise about symptom medicines, especially if you are pregnant, take regular medicines, or have another health condition.

Warning signs

Get urgent medical help for severe or steadily worsening pain, pain focused in one spot, a rigid or swollen abdomen, faintness, confusion, blood in vomit or stool, or inability to keep fluids down. Seek advice if symptoms are not settling, dehydration develops, or you are in a higher-risk group such as a young child, older adult, or someone with reduced immunity.

Questions for your doctor

Tell your clinician what you ate, when pain began, whether others became ill, and whether you have fever, vomiting, or diarrhoea. Ask whether you need examination, testing, or advice about returning to work or preparing food.
