Short answer

Most people with Follicular Lymphoma notice swollen lymph nodes, often as painless lumps in the neck, chest, abdomen, or groin.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer

Most people with Follicular Lymphoma notice swollen lymph nodes, often as painless lumps in the neck, chest, abdomen, or groin. Swollen lymph nodes are a very common presentation of Follicular Lymphoma, but enlarged nodes can also have many other causes, including infections and immune conditions. A swollen node by itself cannot establish the diagnosis.

What swollen nodes can mean

Lymph nodes are small immune-system structures that filter lymph fluid. Follicular lymphoma begins in certain white blood cells and can collect in lymph nodes, making them larger. The swelling may be noticed under the skin, or it may be found on a scan when nodes are deeper in the chest or abdomen. Nodes linked with follicular lymphoma are often not tender and may remain enlarged over time, although their feel and pattern vary from person to person.

Doctors do not identify follicular lymphoma from the location or size of a lump alone. They consider the examination, your symptoms, blood tests, and imaging. If lymphoma is suspected, examining a sample of lymph-node tissue is generally needed to identify the lymphoma type.

What to do about an enlarged node

Arrange a clinical assessment for a node that persists, grows, feels firm or fixed, or appears without an obvious short-lived infection. Note when you first noticed it, where it is, whether it is changing, and whether you have symptoms such as fever, drenching night sweats, unusual tiredness, or unplanned weight loss. Do not repeatedly press or massage the area, because this can make it sore and harder to judge whether it is changing.

Bring a list of medicines and relevant medical history to the appointment. The clinician may examine several lymph-node regions and decide whether observation, testing, imaging, or tissue sampling is appropriate.

When to seek care promptly

Seek urgent medical help if swelling is accompanied by trouble breathing or swallowing, sudden facial or neck swelling, or severe weakness. Contact a clinician promptly for a rapidly enlarging lump, persistent fever, drenching night sweats, or unexplained weight loss. These symptoms do not diagnose lymphoma, but they deserve timely assessment.

Questions for your doctor

Useful questions include: What could be causing this swelling? Which examination or scan is appropriate? Would a lymph-node biopsy be needed, and how would the sample identify the lymphoma type? Which changes should prompt me to contact you sooner?

Questions people ask

Are swollen lymph nodes always follicular lymphoma?

No. Enlarged lymph nodes have many possible causes, including infections and immune conditions. A clinical assessment is needed to understand a persistent or changing node.

Are follicular lymphoma lymph nodes painful?

They are often painless, but tenderness can occur and symptoms vary. Pain, location, or size alone cannot identify the cause.

How is follicular lymphoma confirmed?

When lymphoma is suspected, doctors may use examination, blood tests, and imaging, with lymph-node tissue analysis used to identify the specific lymphoma type.
