Does fine needle aspiration treat a thyroid nodule?

During fine needle aspiration, a clinician guides a thin needle into the thyroid nodule, often using ultrasound, and removes a small cell sample. A laboratory examines the sample. The result may support observation, additional testing, or a treatment plan; it does not generally shrink or remove the nodule. Some fluid-filled nodules may become smaller when fluid is withdrawn, but that is not the same as treating every nodule or proving what caused it.

Follow the instructions for the procedure and arrange follow-up to discuss the laboratory result. Ask whether the sample was adequate and what the next step is if it is unclear. Depending on the findings and ultrasound features, your clinician may recommend monitoring, another sample, or a procedure to remove or otherwise manage the nodule. Do not assume a benign-feeling lump can be assessed by touch alone.

After aspiration, contact your clinician for increasing neck swelling, worsening pain, fever, redness, or drainage. Seek urgent care for trouble breathing, difficulty swallowing saliva, or sudden major swelling in the neck. Before the procedure, report blood-thinning medicines and any bleeding disorder so the team can plan safely.

Ask: Why is aspiration recommended for my nodule? Will ultrasound guide the needle? When will the result be available? What does an indeterminate or inadequate sample mean? Will I need monitoring, another aspiration, or treatment? Which symptoms should prompt an urgent call?
