Does finasteride treatment help with hair loss?

Finasteride reduces conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone, a hormone that can gradually shrink susceptible hair follicles. By lowering this signal, treatment may slow further loss and support thicker-looking growth in some people. It does not address every cause of hair loss, and a response cannot be judged immediately because hair cycles are slow.

The cause and pattern matter. Diffuse shedding after illness, patchy loss, scalp inflammation, traction, nutritional problems, and medicine-related shedding need different assessment. Finasteride also has sex-specific prescribing considerations and is not appropriate during pregnancy because of potential risk to a male fetus.

A clinician should examine the pattern of loss and review your medical history before prescribing finasteride. Share all medicines and supplements, liver problems, fertility or pregnancy plans, sexual symptoms, mood changes, and any breast symptoms. Take it only as directed and do not change the dose or stop abruptly without advice. Keep follow-up appointments so benefit, side effects, and the need for another diagnosis can be reviewed.

Contact your prescriber promptly for troublesome sexual side effects, mood changes, breast tenderness or a breast lump, allergic swelling, or difficulty breathing. Seek assessment for sudden loss, bald patches, painful or inflamed scalp, or loss accompanied by other new symptoms, since these patterns may not be explained by hormone-related hair loss.
