Does fibrocystic breast changes cause breast lump?

Fibrocystic breast changes describe a mixture of fluid-filled cysts, fibrous tissue and normal glandular tissue. The breast may feel ropey, nodular or uneven, and the texture can vary in different areas. Hormonal shifts may make fullness or lumpiness more noticeable at some points in the menstrual cycle.

These changes can affect one or both breasts and may come with tenderness. Because several breast conditions can feel similar, a clinician should assess a lump that is new, different from surrounding tissue, or not settling.

Make a note of the lump's location, size as you perceive it, tenderness and relationship to your cycle. Book a breast assessment if it persists or feels unlike your usual pattern. Imaging may help distinguish a cyst from solid tissue, with sampling considered when findings remain unclear.

A well-fitting supportive bra and a warm compress may ease tenderness. Use only pain relief that is suitable for you, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have another medical condition.

Arrange prompt care for skin dimpling, nipple inversion, bloody discharge, a firm fixed lump, armpit swelling, or a change that is rapidly progressing. Redness, warmth and fever can indicate infection and may need same-day advice. These warning signs require assessment; they do not determine the cause on their own.
