Does fibroadenoma cause breast lump?

A fibroadenoma is a solid breast growth made from glandular and connective tissue. It often feels smooth, firm and well defined, and it may move slightly under the skin when touched. Some are tender, especially when breast tissue is responding to hormonal changes.

A breast lump can have many causes, and touch alone cannot establish which one is present. A clinician may examine the breast and arrange imaging; a needle sample may be considered when the examination or scan needs more information.

Arrange an appointment for a new lump, a lump that persists, or a noticeable change in an existing lump. Before the visit, note when you found it, whether it changes with your menstrual cycle, and whether there is pain or nipple discharge.

Do not repeatedly press the area to test it, as this can make the tissue sore. Wear a supportive bra if movement causes discomfort and follow the assessment plan your clinician gives you.

Seek prompt medical care for a lump with skin dimpling, nipple inversion, bloody discharge, redness with fever, rapid enlargement, or swelling in the armpit. These signs do not identify a diagnosis, but they warrant timely review. Sudden severe pain, marked redness or feeling very unwell may need same-day advice.

Ask: Does the lump feel consistent with a fibroadenoma? Which imaging test is suitable? Would follow-up imaging or a biopsy help? What changes should prompt me to return sooner?
