Does fetal heart monitoring treat fetal growth restriction?

Fetal heart monitoring records your baby's heart rate over time, often alongside uterine activity. Clinicians look at the pattern and how the heart rate responds to movement. In fetal growth restriction, this information can help identify signs that the baby may need closer observation or delivery planning.

The test does not make the placenta work better or directly increase fetal growth. It is one part of assessment and may be considered with ultrasound growth measurements, amniotic fluid checks and placental blood-flow studies.

Follow the appointment timing given by your maternity team and tell them about reduced movements, bleeding, pain or fluid leakage. During monitoring, you may sit or recline while sensors are placed on your abdomen. Ask what the tracing shows and what follow-up is planned.

Treatment decisions depend on gestational age, growth measurements, blood flow, fluid and the baby's overall wellbeing. Options may include continued surveillance, medicines for a planned early birth, or delivery when remaining pregnant is less safe.

Contact your maternity unit urgently if your baby's movements are reduced or absent, even when a previous monitoring test was reassuring. Seek emergency help for heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, fainting or difficulty breathing. A monitoring appointment should not delay care when a new warning sign appears.
