Does fetal growth restriction cause reduced baby movements?

Fetal growth restriction means a baby is not growing as expected in the womb. When the placenta is not delivering enough oxygen or nutrients, a baby may conserve energy and move less. Movement also varies with sleep, your activity and the stage of pregnancy, so reduced movement cannot identify one cause by itself.

Your maternity team may assess the baby's heart rate, growth, fluid around the baby and blood flow through the placenta. These checks help show whether the baby may be under stress and whether closer monitoring or birth planning is needed.

Pause and focus on your baby's usual movement pattern. Contact your maternity unit or obstetric team promptly if movements are less frequent, weaker or noticeably different. Do not rely on a home Doppler, waiting until the next day, or trying to make the baby move with food or a cold drink.

Tell the clinician when you first noticed the change, whether movement returned, and how far along you are. They can decide which assessment is appropriate and explain the findings.

Seek urgent maternity advice for a marked reduction or absence of movement, even if you have no pain or bleeding. Go to emergency care for heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, fainting, or trouble breathing. Reduced movement is a red flag because it can signal that the baby needs prompt evaluation; it is not judged by how common fetal growth restriction is.

Ask: How will you check my baby's growth and wellbeing? What movement pattern should I monitor? When should I contact the maternity unit again? Could placental blood-flow or fluid checks change the birth plan?
