Does fat transfer treat tear trough hollows?

A tear trough is a hollow along the transition between the lower eyelid and cheek. It can reflect loss or movement of volume, bone shape, thin skin, shadows or a combination of features. Fat transfer uses fat taken from another area, prepared and placed in small amounts to improve a volume deficit. It may soften a groove, but it does not necessarily correct eyelid bags, dark colour, puffiness or loose skin.

The under-eye area is delicate. Swelling and bruising are expected possibilities, and unevenness, lumps or an overfilled appearance can occur. Fat behaviour is difficult to predict, so the result may change as healing progresses.

Choose a qualified clinician experienced with lower-eyelid and cheek anatomy. Bring up allergies, dry eyes, previous eye surgery, vision problems, medicines and conditions affecting healing. Ask whether the hollow is truly a volume concern and whether another approach would better address bags or pigmentation. Discuss the donor area, recovery, follow-up and what symptoms require review.

After treatment, contact the surgical team for worsening pain, increasing redness, drainage, fever or swelling that is not following the expected course. Seek urgent eye care for vision changes, severe eye pain, marked one-sided swelling or difficulty moving the eye.
