Does fallopian tube cancer cause persistent pelvic pain?

Persistent pelvic pain is a common presentation of fallopian tube cancer, but the symptom alone cannot identify its cause. Pain in the lower abdomen or pelvis may also result from conditions affecting the reproductive organs, urinary system, bowel, muscles, or nerves. A clinician needs to consider the full pattern, including when the pain began, where it is felt, whether it changes, and which other symptoms are present.

Fallopian tube cancer can irritate or affect tissues in the pelvis, which may lead to ongoing discomfort, pressure, or pain. Some people also notice abnormal vaginal bleeding or discharge, a change in bowel or bladder habits, abdominal swelling, or feeling full sooner than expected. These symptoms are not specific to cancer, and some people with fallopian tube cancer may have subtle symptoms. Persistent or changing pain deserves assessment even when it is mild.

Arrange an appointment with a family doctor, gynaecologist, or other qualified clinician if pelvic pain continues, returns, or interferes with daily activities. Keep a short record of the pain's location, timing, severity, triggers, menstrual or menopausal context, and associated bleeding, discharge, bowel, or urinary changes. Assessment may include an examination and tests selected from your history; imaging or referral may be considered when the findings call for it.

Seek urgent medical care for sudden or severe pelvic pain, fainting, marked weakness, heavy vaginal bleeding, persistent vomiting, a high fever, or a swollen and very tender abdomen. These signs can have several causes and may need prompt treatment. If the pain is new and worsening, do not wait for a routine appointment, particularly when it occurs with bleeding, fever, or difficulty passing urine or stool.
