Does a facelift treat sun-damaged skin?

Sun damage, also called photoaging, can cause uneven colour, rough texture, fine lines, visible vessels and changes in skin elasticity. A facelift works mainly on deeper tissues and excess lax skin, so it may make the face look smoother by repositioning and tightening tissues. It does not erase brown marks, rough patches or most fine surface lines. Those concerns may need a separate skin-focused plan.

A consultation can distinguish laxity from a rough or changing spot. A clinician may discuss resurfacing, prescription creams or other approaches when appropriate, while checking any suspicious lesion before cosmetic treatment.

Describe the changes you want improved: sagging along the jaw, folds around the mouth, blotchy colour, roughness or individual spots. Ask whether a facelift addresses each concern or whether staged skin treatment would be more suitable. Daily broad-spectrum sun protection, protective clothing and avoiding tanning can help limit further damage. Do not apply irritating products to healing surgical skin unless your treating team has advised you to do so.

Arrange a skin assessment promptly for a spot that is new, changing, repeatedly bleeding, crusting, painful or not healing. After surgery, contact the treating team urgently for increasing redness, worsening pain, fever, drainage or sudden swelling, because these may signal a complication needing examination.
