Does surgical excision treat neurofibroma?

A neurofibroma is a growth involving nerve-sheath tissue. A small, localised lesion may be removed when it causes discomfort, catches on clothing, affects appearance, or needs confirmation of its diagnosis. A deeper or more extensive lesion may be close to important nerves, so removal requires careful planning. Excision can address the selected growth but does not remove a tendency to develop other neurofibromas. The procedure may leave a scar or temporary altered sensation.

Arrange assessment with a clinician experienced in skin and nerve-related lesions. Mention pain, tenderness, weakness, numbness, rapid enlargement and any family history of similar growths. Do not squeeze or repeatedly traumatise the lesion. Before surgery, ask how its depth will be assessed, whether tissue will be examined, and how nearby nerve function will be protected.

Seek prompt review if a neurofibroma becomes persistently painful, grows quickly, becomes firm, or causes new numbness or weakness. After removal, urgent advice is appropriate for uncontrolled bleeding, spreading redness, fever, worsening swelling, or a sudden change in movement or sensation.

Ask whether the lesion appears superficial or nerve-associated, what benefit removal is expected to provide, whether it can be removed completely, how sensation may change, and when pathology results will be discussed.
