Does surgical excision treat dermatofibroma?

A dermatofibroma is a firm skin nodule that is often harmless. Excision takes out the nodule and sends it for examination, which can confirm the diagnosis when its appearance is unusual or uncertain. Removal may be considered if the lesion catches on clothing, is repeatedly irritated, painful, or cosmetically bothersome. Because the nodule can extend deeper than it looks, the scar may be as noticeable as the original spot, and complete removal does not guarantee that a similar lesion will not appear elsewhere.

Have a dermatologist assess a firm nodule before choosing removal, particularly if it is growing, changing colour, bleeding, or differs from your other lesions. Discuss observation, biopsy, and excision, including the likely scar and whether the tissue will be sent to pathology. If excision is chosen, follow the dressing and wound-care plan, avoid picking at the site, and protect the healed scar from strong sun.

Contact the clinic if the wound keeps bleeding, separates, or becomes more swollen, hot, painful, or oozy. Seek an earlier skin assessment when the nodule changes quickly, becomes persistently tender, or develops bleeding or crusting. Those changes need a clinician’s examination because a familiar-looking lump can require confirmation.

Ask whether the lesion has typical features, whether a smaller biopsy could answer the diagnostic question, how large the scar may be, and what pathology will check. Also ask how to care for the wound and when to return if the lump or scar changes.
