Does excimer laser therapy treat vitiligo?

Vitiligo causes areas of skin to lose pigment, sometimes gradually and sometimes in episodes. Excimer treatment directs ultraviolet light at selected patches rather than exposing the whole body. The light may stimulate pigment-producing cells that remain in or around the affected skin. Response depends on the patch location, disease activity, skin characteristics and the overall plan. A dermatologist may first check whether the pigment loss is stable and whether another condition could be causing pale skin.

Before treatment, tell the clinician about medicines, previous light sensitivity, autoimmune conditions and any recent spread of white patches. Ask how nearby normal skin, hair and eyes will be protected. Attend sessions as advised and avoid changing the schedule yourself. Use sun protection because depigmented skin burns more easily, and do not apply tanning products to judge colour change. Take note of new patches, irritation or changes in existing areas so the plan can be reviewed.

Arrange a review if pigment loss is spreading, new areas appear, or the diagnosis has not been confirmed. Seek prompt care for blistering, severe burning, marked swelling, eye pain or a widespread reaction after light exposure. A clinician should also review patches that bleed, crust, become painful or develop a persistent rash, since these changes are not typical reasons to assume vitiligo alone.
