Does erysipelas cause spreading redness?

Erysipelas is a bacterial infection affecting the upper layers of skin and nearby lymphatic vessels. The area is often bright red, warm, swollen, tender, and clearly defined, with the edge becoming larger over time. Most people with Erysipelas notice spreading redness, but spreading redness itself has several possible causes and does not identify the diagnosis. Fever, chills, or feeling unwell may occur alongside the skin changes.

Arrange same-day medical assessment for a red area that is expanding, hot, painful, or swollen, especially if you also have fever or feel unwell. Marking the outer edge with a pen can help show whether it is enlarging while you arrange care; do not delay assessment to monitor it. Keep the area clean, avoid scratching, and follow prescribed antibiotic instructions exactly if treatment is started.

Seek urgent help for rapidly worsening redness, severe pain, confusion, faintness, breathing difficulty, persistent vomiting, or red streaks moving away from the affected area. Extra caution is needed when the infection is near the eye, nose, or mouth, or when the person has diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced immunity. These situations can require prompt treatment and monitoring.
