Does erysipelas cause facial swelling?
Facial Swelling is a common presentation of Erysipelas, a bacterial infection affecting the upper layers of skin and nearby lymphatic vessels. When the infection involves the face, the affected area may become puffy, red, hot, tender and clearly separated from nearby normal skin. Fever, chills or feeling generally unwell can occur at the same time.
What the swelling may mean
Erysipelas usually starts when bacteria enter through a break in the skin, such as a cut, crack, ulcer or insect bite. The swelling is caused by inflammation and fluid moving into the surrounding tissues. Facial erysipelas may affect one side more than the other and can extend around the nose, cheek or eyelid. Facial swelling has other possible causes, including an allergic reaction, dental infection, sinus problems or another skin infection, so its appearance alone cannot identify the cause.
What to do now
Arrange prompt medical assessment if facial swelling is red, hot, painful or increasing, particularly if you also have fever or chills. A clinician can examine the skin and look for an entry point or another source of infection. If erysipelas is diagnosed, treatment commonly involves prescribed antibiotics; take them exactly as directed and complete the prescribed course. Keep the area clean, avoid squeezing or scratching it, drink fluids and rest. Do not use leftover antibiotics or share medication.
When to seek urgent care
Seek emergency help immediately if swelling affects your lips, tongue or throat, or if you have trouble breathing, swallowing or speaking. Get urgent assessment for swelling around the eye, vision changes, severe headache, confusion, faintness, rapidly spreading redness or severe pain. These features may signal a serious infection or another condition needing rapid treatment. People with diabetes, a weakened immune system or repeated skin infections should contact a clinician promptly when new facial redness or swelling appears.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what findings support erysipelas rather than an allergic, dental or sinus-related cause; whether you need antibiotics and how to take them; which changes should prompt a return visit; and whether a wound, eczema or swelling elsewhere could be allowing bacteria into the skin.

Questions people ask
Is facial swelling by itself enough to diagnose erysipelas?
No. A clinician also considers redness, warmth, tenderness, the border of the affected skin, fever and other possible causes such as allergy or dental infection.
Can erysipelas on the face be treated at home?
Facial erysipelas needs medical assessment because infection near the eye or mouth can become serious. If antibiotics are prescribed, follow the instructions and seek help if symptoms worsen or new warning signs appear.
